DailyArchNews: Shelter: Home Tours 2021 Explores Designs for Everyone via Livestream
“Kerstin Hellmann, the architect who designed Nallie's Nest, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), observes that the pandemic put the spotlight on how we live, including how spaces can be used in unexpected ways. Her project, originally commissioned for Nathalie by her son and daughter-in-law, has since accommodated other functions, including as a holiday dinner party space, a home office, a guest house, and even as a wildfire victim shelter.”

Berkeleyside: More than trophy homes: AIA East Bay rethinks its annual home tours
“In the backyard of an existing home, the architect Kerstin Hellmann of Oakland turned a work shed lacking a proper foundation and ceiling height into what she describes as ‘a miniature house,’ complete with a kitchen and bath. Initially intended as a home-away-from home for a visiting grandmother, the ADU has ended up serving as an extension of the house, from a home office to a dinner party space.”

“While the house is a nod to the future, with high-tech features such as LED lighting and a home automation system controlled by the owners' iPad, it's also a return to the past, with its Mediterranean-style exterior, a manual dumbwaiter that connects kitchen to dining deck and a laundry chute.”

“The second-floor deck of Geoff Lomax and Sabina Aurilio’s three-bedroom home in Berkeley, Calif., is decidedly contemporary: bifold doors, ipe-wood floors, a kitchenette. But open a sleek cabinet and you’ll find an element better suited to the 19th century: a dumbwaiter.”

Houzz Tour: Stunning Rooftop Deck Tops a Totally Remodeled Home
“Nearly 26 years ago, Geoff Lomax’s brother turned to him as they stood outside the 1929 Mediterranean-style home they had just bought together in Berkeley, California. He pointed to the roof and jokingly said, “That’s where a rooftop deck could go.” Kerstin envisioned a home with lots of beautifully finished woodwork. “It was really worth it,” Lomax says. “Every possible ounce of space is usable. We now have bookshelves, nooks and crannies. There’s no space in the house that isn’t functional and usable.”
